The beauty and hair industries in the UK employ nearly 250,000 people. There are more than 13,000 beauty salons and self employed therapists.
It is a predominantly female profession – around half are self employed and a quarter work part time. According to the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry standards body, HABIA, beauty therapy is a young profession with most therapists in the 16 to 24 age range.
Beauty therapy training can begin as young as 14 with both Kirklees College and White Rose offering placements for pupils on day release from school.
There are no entry requirements for an NVQ level 1.
However, students at 16 who wish to take a level 2 need four GCSEs minimum grade D. B Tech students need five GCSEs grade C or above, including English and a science.
Government funding pays for the training of students under the age of 19.
Anyone over that age may have to pay means-tested tuition fees of up to £950, plus VAT, at the White Rose. It is less at Kirklees College.
Courses in holistic therapies are only open to students over the age of 19 and tend to be the choice of mature students, who usually have to pay course fees.
